FFXIV Lightning Cameo Thoughts

We all know that a FFXIV Lightning appearance is on the way, but what does this mean for future cameos?

Just in case you’ve been away from the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (FFXIV) scene for a bit, perhaps a bit of a refresher is in order. A very special appearance will be happening soon. Something pretty rare in Final Fantasy games, well, with named main storyline characters at least. There will be a FFXIV Lightning Fate. Yep, you read that right. Lightning from FFXIII will be making an appearance in FFXIV as a Fate.

At the time this was announced at the Japan Expo it was met with very mixed reactions. Some felt the fan service was neat to see in a Final Fantasy numbered edition while others felt this lack of segregation of titles meant that FFXIV as a world could not be taken seriously but was instead more of a “Kingdom Hearts” type playground.

In the days following the Expo, Yoshi-P did take to the forums to start laying out the ground work that would hopefully allow a FFXIV Lightning to make sense. Yoshi-P was very intent that this more make sense for both the lore of FFXIV but also for the FFXIII series. He felt that an appearance in one title shouldn’t degrade from either title’s “legitimacy” as a numbered Final Fantasy release.

In a forum post Yoshi-P not only ensured that this FFXIV Lightning appearance fit lore wise but also explained the “rules” for future Final Fantasy cameos.

“Also, in regards to future collaborations with other FF series, we will be adhering to the below principles:

  • We will never introduce characters that would destroy their meaning or story
  • We will not use characters that are already dead or whose role has ended in their title”

Seems to me to be a pretty nice way of saying “No, don’t ask. You’re not getting Sephiroth.” But that’s where my question comes in.

I want to know what you think. Would a FFXIV that went hog wild with fun content that played to the fan service of the franchise really be such a bad idea or are you dead set on storyline solidly its own in a world of its own?

With the FFXIV Lightning Fate players can get gear that resembles the FFXIII heroine (and Snow inspired gear for the guys) so even if I hate the idea and avoid the Fate entirely I’m still likely to see the rewards all over the place anyway. Has my immersion been broken?

To me, I’m fine either way actually. What I don’t want is this hodge podge of flimsy storylines to connect certain characters but not others while hiding under the guise of “it doesn’t fit story wise” when honestly, come on, any story is going to feel at least a bit made up. I get it. There are 5 years between FFXIV version 1.0 and 2.0 and FFXIII (and FFXIII-2) focused on time travel so..yeah…anything’s possible, but doesn’t that honestly start to sound flimsy already?

Go hog wild fan happy or don’t do it at all in my book. I’m fine either way, just pick one. We both know I’m gonna end up with some gear from the FFXIV Lightning Fate though, come on, how could I resist. :)

What do you think about the special cameo and if you could have one cameo in the future (even if it broke Yoshi-P’s rules) what would it be?

  1. I disagree, a total fan-service blowout would ruin the integrity of the story. This isn’t Disney Infinity.

I’m not exactly pleased with the introduction of Lightning in Eorzea, but I am interested in seeing how they choose to do it. I think there will definitely be a right or wrong way of doing this, I just hope they handle it well.

    • I agree, it sorta kills my immersion with this game… gonna play it no matter what but just knowing the fact that there is some type of shit like this in game makes me indifferent about it… this isn’t Kingdom of Hearts for christ sakes, if you want that type of immersion go pre order kingdom hearts 3

  2. Yeah this doesn’t bother me. Considering the ff XIII timelines are already kind of wonky, it’s actually interesting to see. It will be fun in game content, it’s great cross promotion on the side of both games, and it adds some novelty gear to help in mixing things up a bit. Lightning being in the game doesn’t rattle my game immersion any more than Odin being in the game for the millionth time.

I think a lot of negative reaction from this content comes from the fact that many players in general don;t like lightning herself, but she’s actually quite popular with the Japanese audience.
